NAIROBI, Jan. 31 (Xinhua) -- Kenya will host the first investment conference for Somalia in June to showcase opportunities that exist in the Horn of Africa nation, organizers said on Thursday.
The June 12 and June 13 Somalia Investment Summit (SIS), organized by Somalia Economic Forum (SEC) and produced by Global Event Partners is the official government backed event for 2013 to focus on the abundant opportunities and exciting future ahead in the rebuilding of Somalia.
"Somalia's political leadership has taken bold steps towards political stability which is crucial for this country, it is evident that the structures for doing business in Somalia are slowly coming to play and the opportunities for rebuilding this great nation are many to interested parties," said Hassan Dudde, Managing Director of Somalia Economic Forum said in a statement issued in Nairobi.
Somalia has been undergoing a peace and national reconciliation process, with a series of landmark steps that have helped bring an end to the country's nine-year political transition period and the resulting security vacuum which rendered Somalia one of the most lawless States on the planet.
These steps included the adoption of a Provisional Constitution, the establishment of a new Parliament and the appointments of a new President and a new prime minister....Read More
Press Release issued 16th February 2012
Somali Economic Forum (SEF) welcomes the UK-Somalia conference taking place in London due on the 23 Feb 2011. Guests honour include the Prime Minister David Cameron and 42 other dignitaries from around the world, we hope that the outcome will be of profound value to all Somali’s. For the Past few years the issues focused by the donors and international community was purely related to Security (Terror and Piracy) which are both politically driven. As much as we acknowledge the importance of those issues in terms of peace yet we believe the two other major factors that play big roles in every society which are Social and Economic have always been ignored.
Evidently the UK has put a lot of input for the preparations for the meetings that was lead by the Mr Hauge F.M with UK officials meeting with Somalis in the Diaspora.
Somali Economic Forum request for these social and economic necessities to be part of the agenda. We know that dealing with these issues will lead to dealing with unemployment hence resolving issues with piracy, investment in local communities to harvest the rich land which could lead to an end of famine and reduction in poverty. Infrastructure and institutions which will need to put in place for a civic society to function. We believe that any progress achieved will be minimal as long as we ignore the social and economic issues facing Somalia.
We would also like to see independent Somali Organisations taking part in such important event, to give a more complete overview of challenges facing the nation now and in the future, since the objective is a to find solutions to Somalia surely academics and professionals are the best candidates and their input would be unparallel in terms of value added to the conference.

"How are you going to make money in a country that doesn't even exist?" That was probably the question that many people had at the back of their minds when Mohammed Yusef told them he would invest in Somaliland.
Others perhaps did not even know Somaliland had declared independence from Somalia in 1991 and that, in spite of not having been recognised internationally, it does have - unlike Somalia - a working political system and a strong business sector.
Mr Yusef of course knew. Although he now manages a very successful investment firm in the United Kingdom, Invicta Capital Limited, he has always kept in touch with the land where he was born six decades ago, while it still was a British protectorate.
"If what my parents say is true, I always had a mentality for trade, for business, and it's not inconsistent with the family history because the family originated from a fishing village on the Gulf of Aden," he told the BBC's series African Dream.
"My great-grandfather was one of those people that would trade with Aden."
Mr Yusef was educated in the UK where he trained as a solicitor and practiced as a commercial lawyer before starting his own law practice specializing in commercial law, copyright and media law in London.
In 1999 he founded Invicta, a private equity firm providing finance for the media, commercial property and renewable energy sectors which, according to its website, has raised over £1.4bn ($2.3bn) of investment capital. Read More....
